NMiTE's Visit to Bishops

Bishops is pleased to welcome NMiTE’s Ingenuity Studio to school this week. Studio 1 is a high-tech studio created from a refurbished shipping container which houses an array of lab-style and low-tech equipment. Our students are able to participate in exciting and innovative problem-solving projects. The projects are delivered by NMiTE’s facilitators and students will experience studying towards a career in engineering through the exploration of ideas, design and making in a practical sense. Our students are having an amazing week taking part in all the activities.

Exam Results Summer 2019

The Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School is celebrating another year of excellent GCSE results.

We are delighted that in English 64% of our students achieved a strong pass in English and 77% gained a standard pass which is in line with our very aspirational targets for this cohort to be in the top 20% of schools nationally.

In Math’s last year our results put us in the top 9 % of schools nationally. This year we have performed incredibly well again. 57% of students achieved a strong pass and 78% gained a standard pass, again beating the high targets by a significant margin.

Twenty of our students have achieved a grade 7, 8 or 9 in both English and Maths.

Special mention must go to our top performing students Isobel Lawrence Mcqueen (7 x grade 9 and 3 x 8), Oliver Izzard (5x grade 9 with 5 x grade 7 and 8’s), Angus Martin (5 x grade 9), and Ellie Macleod , Jessica Ewing, Charlie Genner, Sam Scot, Jacob Tong and Ethan Forster with exceptional performances.

Headteacher Martin Henton commented:

“I am really proud of the achievements of our students this year who have worked so hard in a climate of challenging national change. Staff have worked tirelessly to support them and helped them to manage the pressure that the new GCSEs present.

We aim to make learning fun and balance the academic demands with a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities for a healthy life balance which students really value”.

St Pauls Church  - Car Parking Permit

From this Easter, vehicle access and parking at St Paul’s Church, on a Monday to Friday during term time, between 8:15 and 9:00am and between 2:45 and 3:30 pm will only be available for those with Car Park Permits issued by St Paul’s Childcare Services and on a day when their children are attending St Paul’s Childcare Services.

Despite regular requests for the parents of schoolchildren not to use St Paul's Church drive to drop off their children or park their car, the problem of serious congestion has persisted.  This has meant that legitimate users of the car park (ie those taking young children to and from the nursery, Childcare staff, and church service attendees) have been unable to park their cars.

In addition the huge number of vehicle movements has made it very dangerous for the hundreds of pedestrians including many young children going to and from the schools and nursery.  An accident is waiting to happen, but together we can stop it. The car park will be regularly patrolled to enforce this requirement and we respectfully seek your co-operation to make St Paul's Church a safe area and a place where users of the premises can park.

Thank you very much for your help and a very Happy Easter.

Mock Trials Success

BHBS team did themselves proud bring home a trophy for Best Prosecution Team.  Not bad for a first attempt.  We are very proud of the team.

Mock Trial

A group of Year 8 and Year 9 students enjoyed a wonderful visit to the Justice Centre in Hereford. Students watched four cases and had the opportunity to speak to Magistrates and Lawyers about the work they do and matters associated with Law.  A highlight was seeing the team take their places in the courtroom. It was a wonderful opportunity and they really enjoyed their day.

We will be participating in the Mock Trial competition on the 9th March 2019. Wish us luck. The team have worked incredibly hard and will no doubt gain a great deal from this challenging, exciting experience.

Forensic Science Workshop

On the 22 March 2019 113 Year 9 and Year 10 student will take part in a forensic science workshop.  The scenario is that a 17 year old school girl is found lying dead on the ground in a disused military bunker. The girl's parents reported her missing four days prior when she failed to return home from school. There are signs of a struggle and a substantial wound to the head appears to be the cause of death.

Students will examine the crime scene and analyse the evidence including entomology, trace evidence, fingerprints, toxicology and much more.

A detailed write up of the day will follow shortly.

Safer Internet Day 2019

Safer Internet Day 2019 will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 5th February 2019. The focus for the event is  “Together for a better internet”.  The day provides a fantastic opportunity to engage with our young people about their digital lives. To support the work we will be doing you can use some of the resources. These have been designed  to help you talk to your children about having a positive and safe time online. They include conversation starters, a factsheet, family pledge card and more! All our students will complete a session on Internet safety and we hope you will support this at home.

 Deputy Headteacher appointment (19.12.2018)

As many of you may know, this week we interviewed for a new Deputy Headteacher, to fill the post vacated by Mr Henton. From a strong field of applications we shortlisted and interviewed six candidates. The interview process lasted for two days on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Both Mr O'Byrne our Chair of Governors and myself are absolutely delighted to announce that the selection panel have appointed Mrs Bunston to be the new Deputy Headteacher with immediate effect. I am sure you will join me in congratulating her in this important role which will be pivotal in developing and growing our leadership at Bishops.

Thank you - Martin Henton (Headteacher)
