The Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School
‘The more that you read, the more you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go’.
An important role of our library in school is to support literacy and to encourage a lifelong love of reading. As a student at Bishops you are automatically a member of our library meaning that you can borrow books and use the facilities during opening times.
We have a well-stocked range of up to date and popular fiction and non-fiction books. The Library Manager is available to support students in the library and to help guide them in finding books they will enjoy.
In order to support students with their literacy, all Year 7 and 8 students and other selected groups are enrolled on the Accelerated Reader programme. The program aims to engage students, motivate reading practice and improve reading progress. Books in the library are also colour coded to help students find the correct range of books for their level.
Students in Year 7 have a timetabled reading lesson each week to support their reading and comprehension skills on the Accelerated Reader programme. At various times, students are brought to the library during their subject lessons to use the resources.
Study area and computers
We have a large library space with a range of seating areas for students to be able to read and study in a quiet environment. We also have a number of computers to support students with their work which link to a printer for students to be able to print off school work.
eBooks and Audiobooks
Students also benefit from being able to access free eBooks and audiobooks to complement our library stock through an online service called ePlatform.
ePlatformePlatform can be accessed via the school website or the App. ePlatform also supports the Accelerated Reader programmme.
Book club, trips and competitions
Our reading group ‘Page Turners’ meets on a regular basis to discuss books they have read.
Students are also invited to take part in the shadowing of ‘The Carnegie Children’s Book Awards’ in which they prepare a presentation on a given book, then present these at the Town Hall alongside students from other schools in Herefordshire.
There are also opportunities for students to visit the Hay Festival each year to see presentations from various Authors.
The library also runs various competitions throughout the year including on World Book Day.
Scholastic Book Club and Book Fair
Students also have access to buy discounted books through the Scholastic Book Club and the two Book Fairs which we run each year.
